Weekend Trip to Chicago

I've had a lot of good to great things happen this year--new job, trip to Alaska, new grandnephew, etc., but this past weekend has to be about the best thing that has happened this year. (My apologies to family members and friends who are thinking why I didn't list something about you!)

Background: A couple of years ago, Mom and I took a short trip to Savannah. When we returned to Mom and Dad's home, I proposed a trip to Dad. I told him that growing up I was always interested in his telling about taking the train with Uncle Jay and Uncle Ralph to Wrigley Field. He would tell about jumping on the dugout, leaning over and taking pictures of the players. I think his stories were one influence leading to my love of sports. I always wanted to go with him to Wrigley Field. "If I have a job next summer I would like  you to come to MI and then we can go take in a game at Wrigley Field." He pulled out his iPad and asked if I had a date in mind that he could put on his calendar. Little did I know my comment would be prophetic and I wouldn't have a job the next summer. In fact, the next summer I was living in Texas!

Earlier this summer I was blessed with a new job, and on my visit to SC for Father's Day, I told Dad I'd like to celebrate that new job by taking him to Chicago and game at Wrigley Field.

Friday about 6:00 we met at Midway, got a rental car and headed to Penn Station East Coast Subs. We drove through LaGrange Park and on various streets that brought back a lot of memories for him. He talked about Uncle Ralph's family living around that area. We saw a Jewel grocery story and he told about Mom winning 10 large porterhouse steaks playing their bingo game. I'm pretty sure he was tasting those steaks again as he talked about them!

The next day we drove to a noon game at Wrigley. When we turned on Irving Park Dr. he said he and Mom drove that street into church every Sunday--one hour each way and no a/c in the summer. We looked for several places before the game but needed to get to the game.

Here are a few shots outside Wrigley.

About half the game was a great day for a game. Thankfully our seats were under the covering of the upper deck so we stayed dry during the two or three times it rained. The overcast weather actually made it easier to follow the ball. We were no doubt two of the very few people who kept a scorecard during the game.

The Cubs were down 7-2 to the Dodgers after losing to them 14-5 the previous night. In the 7th, the Cubs scored four runs to get to 7-5. In the 8th they scored two more runs to win 8-7! A Cubs win made a great day even better.

After the game we began our hunt for various locations. We think we found the Wilson Y where Dad rented a room during his working days in Chicago.

Then we drove to Seeley Ave. to this building. Mom lived here with several single girls before she married Dad. The girls moved elsewhere, but when Mom and Dad got married she moved back here and they had an apartment in this building.

Then we drove around the corner to this place. This is the church where my parents met. It is now a Hispanic Seventh Day Adventist Church. We don't know if they were finishing services or getting ready for a service but the minister was there with a handful of people. He was very gracious for us to walk around. I have a video of Dad on the front steps telling about walking into a Wednesday evening service and seeing Mom at the top of the stairs. Apparently as they say the rest is history and there are now four children, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. I'll try to upload the video. I don't take video much and it is sideways. (Showing my age when it comes to technology apparently.)

I asked if he remembered the microwaves in the kitchen!

We both flew back to our respective homes Sunday afternoon. It was a great trip. I will cherish this weekend for ever.

Thankful Thursday 08/28/14

1. I'm quite sure they have hired a replacement--for my old position that is. I'm super duper excited. Need I say more?

2. Three day weekend. Three day weekend. Need I say more?

3. The beach this weekend. The beach this weekend. Need I say more?

4. Watched my sister's DVD of her China trip presentation at her church. What a great opportunity she had. I may have had a few tears hearing my nephew sing. So thankful I live in this country.

5. It's so nice to get in the pool in the evening after a long day at work.

6. Made plans for my parents to visit later in the fall. Only thing is I wish the trip were planned for longer.

7. Ten years ago today I moved to MI. While the distance was so far from family, and I didn't like that, I made several very dear friends there. They are the kind that you can always pick up wherever you left off and will be friends not for a time, or for a season, but for life!

8. Twenty something years ago today Jaimie Medlen, one of seven best nieces in the world and mother of Tripp, was born. Yes, her card is going in the mail today. Happy Birthday, Jaimie!!!

Monday Musings Except Now It's Tuesday

1. One year ago today I walked into my place of work for my first full day of work. It's been a good year. I am part of a great team.

2. It was really good to get this since at my last place of employment I found my position would be eliminated three days before my first work anniversary there.

3. Over the weekend I stopped at a Farm Bureau booth that had a prize wheel. The sign said "Everybody wins." My spin stopped on "Chance to win a cooler." I filled out the form, but then I commented that I really hadn't won anything. The guy said I won a chance to win a cooler, but I told him I wasn't walking away with anything so I really hadn't won anything. The lady behind the table was not a very nice person. She said "Well you won a chance at a really nice cooler, but go ahead and have a sucker." I'm pretty sure when I walked away my slip of paper went in the trash can and not in the drawing bucket.

Thankful Thursday 8/7/14

1. Good week at work. There is hope that my old position will be filled soon.

2. I've left work the last two days at a very reasonable time and felt good about my workload.

3. Ate tamales yesterday for the first time in over 20 years and only the second time in my life. I didn't get any spice in my eye like I did the first time.

4. I've enjoyed being home alone for a few days, but I'm glad Renae is back today.

5. I got almost everything done on my list while Renae was gone.

Thankful Thursday 7/31/14

It may be early, early Friday morning in Dallas but it's still Thursday in Alaska!

1. It's been a week of long days at work, but I'm so thankful I have the opportunity to do one plus jobs since one year ago today I didn't have a job.

2. It's been a fun week reliving memories of the trip posting pictures on fb and the family blog.

3. Facetime with Emma yesterday. She was eating hotdogs and 'matoes for lunch. She wasn't about to share her 'matoes with me.

4. Wednesday night we got in the spa to cool off after a walk around the neighborhood. All of a sudden we smelled skunk--very fresh skunk. You've never seen two middle-aged overweight women crawl out of the spa and get in the house faster!!! Thankful the smell stayed outside.

Thankful Thursday 7/17/14

1. Alaska.

2. Two people at work did so much to cover me that catching up was not as major of a deal as I expected.

3. My old boss was in the office today. It was great to see him. He was an encouraging leader exactly at the time I needed that.

Thankful Thursday 7/3/14

1. Thankful for the U.S.A. I think it's the best of any place.
2. Thankful that my sister is having a wonderful visit in China with my nephew.
3. Thankful that technology allows her to share pics and posts with me to put on her blog. Her family and friends can track her trip on the other side of the world.
4. Thankful I survived a very, very busy week of work. With the holiday weekend quite a few were on vacation, and I had to cover my old job, what I do of my new job, and other communications work as well.
5. Thankful a co-worker spent several hours prepping the two offices for two new team members on Monday. She knew I was overloaded and completely took that off of me.
6. Thankful she and another co-worker are so willing to cover me next week while I'm on vacation next week.
7. Thankful we had only a half day of work today which gave me more time to get ready to leave tomorrow.
8. Thankful that last night after doing yard work I could get in the pool and cool off. It was wonderful.
